5 REASONS WHY BENIDORM IS A PERFECT DESTINATION DURING WINTER
Have you ever heard about this city in the province of Alicante? People call it the “New York city of the Mediterranean coast” due to its recognizable skyline. With its golden beaches, crystalline water and a favorable climate, Benidorm is one of the most popular destination all year – round.
I first visited Benidorm back in January 2014 during my Erasmus experience. Since then, I’ve always come back every year. I use to spend some days here during summer because the weather isn’t too hot and of course because I like going to the beach and working on my tan (or trying at least, I’m a pale girl), but I mostly prefer Benidorm in winter and now I’m going tell you why:
#1. Uncrowed beaches.
If you prefer calm and listening to the sound of waves crashing on the shore, this is the right place for you. Maybe too cold? Trust me you will not freeze! As I have already said before, Benidorm has a micro-clime that breaks to the seasons and can offer a pleasant temperature even in winter. This town has two beaches, Poniente and Levante. The former (My favorite) is longer, wider and surely quitter than the latter. Levante beach is more crowed with a promenade full of bars and restaurants.
#2. Gastronomic Route
You cannot leave the city without trying its cuisine. I will not lie, as a very touristic destination Benidorm offers a variety of international cuisine as: Italian, British, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, etc… If you want to try something, more Spanish you have to go to the old town center. A must stopping place for me is Pintxos Aurrera where you can taste a variety of delicious pinchos and tapas. In the street Santo Domigo there are a lot of tiny bars and restaurants as well, so I highly recommend you to do as the local do: Have a glass of wine or beer and a tapa of each bar. If you want to try something more typical of the city you must go to the restaurant La Mejilloneria, where you can taste the best mussels ever and very good paella. You may queue a bit but trust me it’s worth it!
#3. Nightlife
In this city it’s impossible to get bored. There are so many clubs and thousands of bars that it is vey difficult to choose one. When I want to party I prefer to go to the “English zone” which for me is like to be into another world because there so many tourists especially from England. In this urban area, there are very good bars and clubs that offer good music, fantastic drinks and great entertainment.
#4. Close to other important cities
Staying in Benidorm you have the opportunity to visit other nearby important cities or more peculiar small villages. It is only 36 minutes from Alicante, and an hour and a half from Valencia. Altea and Villajoyosa are small villages very closed to Benidorm and I think they are a must – see. If you do not have a car you can perfectly reach each places by bus or train.
#5 Beautiful sunset ever
Benidorm is a perfect sunset location. Honestly, I am obsessed with it and trust me when I say that in this place there are the most beautiful sunset that I’ve ever seen. The intensity of the colors in the sky are reflected on the skyscrapers and it is just very magical.
I highly recommend you going to see the sunset in the Mirador del Castillo, also called the balcony over the Mediterranean, which is one of the city’s most popular landmarks and offers a spectacular view of the city’s skyline and the vast Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy the moment and don’t forget to take a picture!
